Trauma affects our ability to respond flexibly and appropriately to stressful situations when the stakes are high.
This makes it harder to make choices that reflect what we really think, feel or want.
When each alternative evokes intense and conflicting emotions in us, we can get stuck without knowing why.
If we underestimate the effect of 'small' traumatic experiences on our nervous system during development, we fail to see the connection between past and present.
We then unconsciously continue to use
old survival strategies, even though they are no longer effective.
In a sense, we act blindly and risk repeating behaviors that are harmful to ourselves.

The choices we make are very important for how we see the world and our role in it. If we find ourselves stuck in the same circumstances again and again, it can have a long term impact on our sense of identity and self-confidence. Fortunately, thanks to our brain's plasticity, we can regain our basic trust in ourselves. We just need the right knowledge and guidance.
